While this year Apple launched its priciest smartphone in the market, next year it may bring a cheaper variant of the 9.7-inch iPad model. As mentioned by Digitimes, the 9.7-inch iPad model, which was launched this year and costs Rs 28,000 (base Wi-Fi model), may have an even cheaper variant.
The report says that Apple could make the cheaper 9.7-inch iPad model available in emerging markets, which in all likelihood includes India. Bringing a cheaper iPad device in markets could revive the segment. The company faced a decline in the tablet segment since past three years now. This year’s launches however, helped it grow to some extent.
Although there is no word on the specifications of the cheaper 9.7-inch iPad model, we assume it may be less powerful than the current model. Digitimes adds that the particular model will be manufactured by Compal Electronics and could see the light of the day in Q2 of next year, which means in April, May and June.
This year’s Apple iPad 9.7-inch costs Rs 28,000 and Rs 35,700 for the Wi-Fi 32GB and 128GB storage version. The cellular version of the 9.7-inch iPad is priced at Rs 38,600 and Rs 46,300.
Apple’s current 9.7-inch iPad sports an aluminium unibody enclosure and a Retina display with 2048×1536 pixel resolution. It is powered by Apple’s A9 chipset with 64-bit architecture, along with the M9 motion co-processor.
There’s an 8MP rear autofocus camera with f/2.4 aperture, 5P lens and several shooting modes including Panorama, Timer, Hybrid IR Filter, Auto Image Stabilization and more. The camera can record Full HD resolution video at 30fps and slo-mo videos at 120fps. The 9.7-inch iPad also has a 1.2MP FaceTime HD camera with f/2.2 aperture and HD video recording.
The device is backed by a 32.4Wh non-removable battery that is rated to deliver up to 10 hours of web surfing.
