HTC U11 will get Android 8.0 Oreo OS update starting today

HTC, the Taiwanese smartphone maker, in June took the wraps off its flagship smartphone of the year, U11. The smartphone was launched running Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box. But, starting today (November 27) the handset will get Android 8.0 Oreo OS update, per Mo Versi, company’s vice president of product management.

Versi made the announcement on Twitter over the weekend. It is worth adding that bringing Android 8.0 Oreo to HTC U11 also makes the company third OEM after OnePlus and Nokia to bring the new OS version to its users.

For now, HTC will be rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo to unlocked HTC U11 smartphones in the US. Following this, other countries should also get the update soon. The carrier-locked versions may take some extra time given that they customise the OS version even more before deploying it.

Nonetheless, all users can expect all the major features coming to HTC U11 as a part of Android 8.0 Oreo update. This will include the Picture-in-Picture mode for better productivity, passwords auto-fill and Smart text selection, which automatically converts addresses and phone number texts into clickable links that will directly open Maps or the phone dialer.

It is not sure exactly when other HTC smartphones will get the OS version. However, in later tweets, Versi has confirmed that the company is already working on rolling out Android Oreo to the Sprint carrier version of HTC U11. It will come to the unlocked version of last year’s flagship HTC 10, too.
“It’s coming soon. I’ll let you know when we’re close. The 10, Ultra and u11 life will receive the update. Thanks,” Versi tweeted. Over that, he said that HTC A9 won’t be receiving Android Oreo OS update.
HTC U11 is the first ever smartphone to feature ‘squeezable sides’. Running HTC Edge Sense user interface, the handset comes with 8 sensors on the sides to register the squeeze. These sensors are integrated with the Edge Sense and lets users long press to launch an app. The feature can easily be customised inside the settings menu.
